Come for a 3 hour walking tour of 4 solar homes in northern Blount County.
Bring your lunch and eat with us at noon. The tour will feature an
underground house, a modified yurt, a wood-framed house with clerestory
windows, and a strawbale house.
All homes are designed for passive solar heating, and natural ventilation
and cooling. The following solar technologies will be displayed and
explained: drainback solar water heating systems, solar PV systems for
electricity generation, and efficient refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners
powered by solar PV systems. Two homes have been independent of the
power grid since they were built. Energy efficient equipment and strategies,
rain water catchment systems, vegetative shading and more will be included
in the tour.
These homes have participated in the solar tour since 1993 and have
evolved based on our experiences and improvements in technology.
