I-Renew Iowa City Area Solar Tour

The Iowa Renewable Energy Association (I-Renew)  will be providing environmentally friendly transportation (for up to 8 people)  for a guided tour of 5 Solar and other renewable energy sites in and around Iowa City.  The 5 guided tour sites and some additional sites will be open for self-guided tours from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Schedule: (Please note that times are approximate and may vary.)

  • 11:00AM Meet at University of Iowa Solar Car Charging Station, 640 South Madison St, Iowa City
  • 11: 45AM Private home tour: superinsulated home with solar hydronic heating system.
  • 12:30 PM Green Delta T solar heating
  • 1:00 PM Return to U of I for those who don't want to continue for the southern leg of the tour.
  • 1:30 PM Yoderville Biodiesel Collective - with PV, solar hot water and biodiesel processing. One of I-Renew's transport vehicles will be running on 100% biodiesel made here from used cooking oil.
  • 2:00 PM Farmers Electric Cooperative - Solar tracking PV array and Community Solar Garden Project -  Warren McKenna will talk about FEC's solar installations, energy efficiency programs, and Iowa's first Community Solar Garden project.
  • 3:00 PM End of tour - Return to University of Iowa to retrieve personal vehicles.

I-Renew is partnering with Prairiewoods Franciscan Spritiuality Center  in Hiawatha, IA site, of I-Renew's Iowa Renewable Energy Training Center, and Indian Creek Nature Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for this year's national solar tour. If you prefer a self-guided experience and are in the Cedar Rapids area, please visit these sites. Information on other tour sites will be available at Prairiewoods and Indian Creek.  A map with information on additional sites outside of the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City corridor will be available at the tour meeting sites.
