Our solar system is a unique arrangement of East/West facing panels in order to maximize the production within the limited space of our Dining Hall roof. It also is unique in that we dug trenches to three meters in order to meet net metering requirements by our local utility. Our system is 55 kW – but net metering only applies to systems that are 20kW or smaller. Luckily, we have multiple meters on site, and could maximize solar through using all three meters on main camp. We also lease 80 community solar panels through our local utility, which provides solar power to our staff houses.
We offer guests to Camp Friedenswald a Sustainability Tour, which includes food waste procedures, solar panels, our LED/motion occupancy sensor and timer lighting upgrade, our EV charger (free for guests to use), our composting system and recycling area, and our ecological restoration areas (prairie and oak savanna), outdoor art installations, and playground structures made with black locusts beams sourced from Camp and prepped on site.
A list of our sustainable features can be found on our Resilience and Sustainability webpage: https://friedenswald.org/about/resilience-sustainability-camp/
