This 1884 house, located in the West 7th neighborhood of St Paul, MN, includes currently 24 solar panels installed on the roof of the garage, connected to the grid using 24 Enphase inverters. The installation was provided by AllEnergySolar.com. I also own a 2014 Tesla car that I recharge from the garage. All the natural gas appliances have been changed to electrical appliances (except for the dryer, still on natural gas). The initial solar system installed in 2020 had 8 panels, which corresponded essentially to my electrical usage for lights, fridge and washing machine. The 24 panels installed in the Summer of 2021 provide enough electricity on average for recharging the electric car, the fridge, the washing machine, the heat pump water heater, and lights/computers/TV, etc., which makes the house about 50%/50% solar/natural gas.
I started the transformation in 2019 when I bought the house, and plan to convert the old natural gas heating system to a heat pump, and eventually adding a last set of panels on the roof of the house. During the tour, I’ll show graphs of charging patterns using the Egauge software that shows how the grid essentially acts as a “battery”, providing on average enough electricity for both the house and the electric car. I decided in 2019 to transform this 90% natural gas old house, now into a 50%/50% solar/natural gas house, and eventually into a 100% solar house, once the heating system is upgraded in a couple of years from now.
