We have an all electric house in CEC territory and we knew there were lots of opportunities to become more efficient. First we started with an energy audit, which recommended we add attic insulation and weather sealing. We removed an old “pony” water heater and upgraded our pellet stoves that we can use biomass heating instead of our electric furnace. We’ve installed a number of ceiling fans so we hardly ever turn on the AC in the summer. SolarTubes were put in the dark spaces of the home so that we don’t need to turn on electric lighting during the day. As icing on the cake, we put an 8 kW solar electric array on our barn to help cover our domestic power use and pumps. The house currently has a heat pump water heater for domestic hot water.
Additionally, we compost, have chickens, and use an a solar-charged electric cargo bike to tote the kids to preschool. We are waiting for more family friendly electric car options to come out in 2022!
