City of Cape Canaveral Community Center (C5)
The City of Cape Canaveral Community Center (C5) – located at Canaveral City Park – is host to the City’s first ever municipal rooftop solar array, which is designed to offset the building’s electric utility costs. The east-west oriented ballasted solar array, composed of 72 panels, is able to produce up to 48 kilowatts of clean electricity, offsetting much of the building’s power needs during peak hours of operation. This solar array is expected to produce approximately 67,861 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, allowing for the system to completely pay for itself and then some during its 25-year lifespan. This will help to save over $242,500 in avoided electric utility costs to the residents of Cape Canaveral. Rated to withstand wind speeds of up to 160 mph, it will also serve to eliminate an estimated 1,325 tons of carbon dioxide from the City’s operations; or the equivalence of 19,880 tree seedlings being grown for 10 years. City staff will showcase the C5’s sustainable infrastructure, solar inverter systems, low impact development features, and give a virtual tour of the rooftop solar system as well as display a real-time data dashboard linked to the array. The C5’s address is: 7920 Orange Ave, Cape Canaveral, FL 32920. Free parking is available around the perimeter of the building and Canaveral City Park as a whole. The tour will begin in the building’s main lobby at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 1.
