Donnan Solar Site
October 2, 2021 - January 15, 2022
The Donnan’s installed their initial solar system in 2018 that included 11 solar panels (300W each) for a 3.3kW system along with a Tesla Powerwall2 backup battery (14kWh rating with 13.5kWh usable). Since the Powerwall2 charges entirely with solar energy, it was also eligible for the 30-percent federal tax credit that year. June 2019 brought about the purchase of a Chevy Bolt which has averaged a range of 3.2 miles per 1kWh during the first year driving about 8,000 miles in western Pennsylvania. Shortly after that, they installed a Level 2 charger that adds 25-miles of range on the Bolt for every hour of charging. In June 2020, the couple had Tesla Energy install another 18 solar panels (315W) to their front roof, adding another 5.67kW system for a new overall solar system of 8.97kW. With net metering, when they ‘feed the grid’ with excess solar production, they get a 1-for-1 credit for each kWh. The Powerwall2 enables household lights and appliances to continue working during grid outages, provided the battery is charging or holding a charge, which can be adjusted to variable levels.
