Hans and Francey’s Passive Solar Lagoon Home
October 2, 2021 - January 15, 2022
We’ve always been interested in “passive solar” and “not so small house” approaches to create a truly livable house. Architect Debbie Coleman of Sunplans reflects these sensibilities. When it came time for us to build our dream home in Gulf Shores, AL we had the added challenge of building to Hurricane resilience to the Gold Standard. The house also needed to fit in to the sensibilities of the neighborhood, where homes on stilts prevail.
All these factors have come together in our home. We have a house that through the design of the eves, the mass of tile flooring, and the use of insulation is efficient in the use electricity, with far lower cost when compared to our previous house.. The house is light, open, and airy and takes advantage of the views to the south. And the house is resilient, surviving Hurricane Sally, which was a direct hit on Gulf Shores in September 2020, and subsequent storms.
