Off Grid Planetarian Living

Built in 2001, this off-grid super-insulated home has performed exceptionally well, inspired hundreds of visitors over the years, and continues to evolve. Sporting both the original (ca 2000) 2.4kW pole-mounted and 8.4kW (ca 2018) PV, LiFePO4 Relion batteries, a TARM cordwood gasifier boiler, green-building products, and modern amenities for a comfortable life, the now-retired homeowners have addressed next steps in sustainability. In 2017, they built the Veg Mahal – an out-building constructed with local and high-performance building materials – to grow and store homegrown fruits and vegetables year-round without fossil fuels; the greenhouse includes a climate battery/ground-to-air-heating system; the root cellar will be ramping up for winter activity. The vegetative roof atop the building provides insulation, cooling effect, rainwater run-off mitigation, and beauty. Solar water pumping feeds the irrigation systems for the gardens and greenhouse. The Summer Kitchen (ca 2021) includes an alpha-site/first in the US installation of a Sunamp phase-change heat battery and a Rizzoli wood-only oven/stove. An all-electric Cub Cadet riding mower, a biodiesel-fueled (25 years old) John Deere tractor, and an EV charging station awaiting the arrival of a Subaru Solterra, are replacing ICE engines. Please respect our time and arrive for tours at either 10am or 1pm. You may walk the trails on the property before or after those formal tours. No dogs please.

  • Learned Farm Rd is our driveway off of NH Route 25 at mile marker 14.1. Between the villages of Glencliff and Pike.
  • EV Charging, Level 2, available on a first come first charge basis.
  • Please note: we live in Cell Hell so please adjust your mobile-phone expectations.
  • We may ask that you mask-up inside the buildings.

Please note this solar site is hosting attendees on 10/01 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. As well as, on 10/02 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
