Small Old Home on a Small Budget — All-Electric, with Solar Panels – and Sustainable Living
This is just a casual “tour,” if you want to look at my humble, simple home set-up. Panels are on the back of the house. Depending on the attendees, a look at the inside of the home is possible. This was not a big money investment to go all-electric. It was done over time, and with some used appliances.
Besides wanting to divest my life of fossil fuels, disposables and plastic (still not 100% divested), I was hoping to show that all-electric and solar is possible for just about anyone on a small budget – and that even in a cold climate, cutting yourself off from the natural gas pipeline is no big deal.
The 0.2-acre home lot is treed and low-mow (with many singing insects at night). All wet/biodegradable trash is “composted” (just a pile). Another target is to be disposables-free, e.g., using a bidet (no TP used for 3 years), and old clothes as rags. Attempting to be recyclables-free, too, but that is harder.
I checked the box for “Electric Vehicle,” but it’s really a used hybrid 2013 Prius Plug-In, with minor charging capabilities and very low range. It’s a learning experience for charging, EV infrastructure, etc.
