About Shawl-Anderson Dance Center
Shawl-Anderson Dance Center is a nonprofit dance center located in Berkeley, California. The mission of Shawl-Anderson Dance Center (SADC) is to nurture and mentor the growth of dancers and choreographers; cultivate a healthy and supportive atmosphere for creative expression; sustain traditions essential to the field; and foster the evolution of the art of dance. SADC provides dancers of all ages and levels with contemporary training in a radically supportive environment and provides a venue for creating, sharing and witnessing dance.

Rebecca Johnson, the Executive Director of Shawl-Anderson Dance Center says, “Shawl-Anderson Dance Center is open 360 days per year and the space is used by thousands of people each week. Every person that comes through the doors can rest assured that their participation is part of the solar revolution! Since the installation of solar by RE-volv a decade ago, our students and community have become increasingly aware of their environmental impact in each choice they make throughout the day. The knowledge that our day-to-day activity is facilitated by solar power is a joy for our community members, many of whom experience SADC as their second home.”

Going Solar with RE-volv
Shawl-Anderson Dance Center was the first nonprofit that RE-volv solarized in 2013. By going solar with RE-volv, Shawl-Anderson Dance Center will save over $63,000 on electricity bills over the life of the system. In addition, as the Dance Center pays back RE-volv over time, RE-volv uses this capital to fund more solar projects for nonprofits throughout the country. Since 2013, when the system was built, the Dance Center has re-invested the savings from the solar system into their people and programs, including faculty and staff pay increases, scholarship programs for youth and adults, and expanding their presenting programs to serve more artists and audiences.

Solar’s Impact on the Community
By going solar with RE-volv, the thousands of people who visit this space every week are able to learn about and see the power of solar in action. Rebecca Johnson, Executive Director of Shawl-Anderson Dance Center says, “Our community members are very aware of their environmental impact in their day-to-day lives. Having a space to commune, create, move, express and share that is supported by solar power is a gift. Our participants can experience the supportive and nurturing way that we share dance at SADC, all while nurturing for and caring for our environment. RE-volv’s installation of solar has provided one way for our daily experience to align with our organizational values and ideals of care and community.”
