A middle-income family of three living in a 1951 Twinbrook Levittown Ranch decided to gut remodel their house to be an all-electric, net zero energy (NZE) home. Completed in 2021, it is the first certified NZE single-family home in Montgomery County and the 11th in Maryland. The home is certified under the U.S. EPA’s ENERGY STAR® and Indoor Air Quality Plus programs, and the DOE’s Net Zero Energy Ready program. The home became net zero 7-months after occupancy and is now net positive. Climate resiliency elements include colonial architecture features for summer cooling.
The home won ‘Best Retrofit’ award from the Frederick County Building Industry Association and was featured on Designing Spaces, a home improvement show airing on Lifetime TV. It was also featured in the Net-Zero Energy Coalition – National Capital Region’s ‘Beauty of Zero’ opening reception. Extensive vegetable garden, honeybees, and chickens.
