Univ of California Merced Science and Engineering Breezeway
October 2 - October 3
Solar panels are mounted on the top and sides of the area between two parts of the Science and Engineering Building. The panels are mounted to enable some light to pass between the modules providing partial shade for people entering the buildings. The resulting space is quite pleasant and is frequently used for informal receptions and gatherings. The solar panels generate electricity for the building, making use of Merced’s excellent solar resource. Thus, this particular system provides both architectural benefits as well as clean power. The university has also installed multiple MWs of solar systems in more conventional configurations as the university is moving toward a zero-emissions power system.
