Western Colorado University – Solar Golf Cart
October 2, 2021 - January 15, 2022
Western Colorado University LEAD Sustainability students modified the golf cart they use for picking up FreeCycle donations. The project was funded by the university’s Sustainability Fund (student funded through a small fee each semester). The existing 36-volt battery bank in the golf cart and a reuse 120-watt module made for a very low-cost solution to save energy.
The existing golf cart was retrofitted with a reuse 120-watt PV module and a Genasun golf cart charge controller that takes the 17-volt module and steps up the voltage by 3x while cutting the amps by 3. Additional costs included about 20 feet of PV wire plus miscellaneous nuts/bolts and connectors. Western Solar Society held a “Battle of Watts” race with the Gunnison Gardens (local produce grower) team taking the checkered flag in their 48-volt rig with no speed governor.
