Hybrid Hybrid Event

We’re excited to be part of the 26th Annual National Solar Tour.

Our passive solar journey started when we were looking for energy efficient options for our new home construction in Laramie, Wyoming. Our search led us to a passive solar architect with over 25 years’ experience designing sun-inspired homes. All planning was done remotely via phone, email and cloud storage. We completed various homework assignments to gather details about the build site to be sure our home would blend into the surrounding landscape while providing amazing views and performing flawlessly.
Our second journey involved finding a builder near Laramie, WY that either (A) had experience building passive solar homes or (B) was enthusiastic to learn along with us. We went with option B, connecting with a builder with over 20 years’ experience building in the extreme weather conditions of Albany County, WY. We worked together throughout the construction phase to incorporate local build best practices and construct a home that is both durable and energy efficient.

The virtual tour video will highlight passive solar performance during our first year in the home. The In-person tour will also include information about our experience building in southeast Wyoming and more in-depth data on window NFRC ratings, insulation, etc. We’ll also have plenty of time for questions and answers.

Our home is located within a 20,000+ acre residential ranch with abundant animals, including horses, pronghorn antelope, mule deer, coyotes, swift foxes, prairie dogs, badgers, hawks, owls, eagles, etc. It might sound like a nature park, but all animals are wild and living in their natural habitats. Please do not interact closely with any of them but do enjoy watching them from afar.
Ranch roads are all dirt/gravel. Although 4-wheel drive is not required for normal access, vehicles with low clearance might not fare well. Please plan accordingly.
On the days of the in-person tours, we will meet guests at the Wild Horse Ranch main gate along WY-130 (Snowy Range Road) at the designated tour start time and lead everyone to our home – think caravan.
