Lincoln Electric, the world leader in the development and manufacture of arc welding products, is a major supplier to the developing wind tower fabrication industry. In the U.S. alone, over 50 percent of installed towers were fabricated with Lincoln Electric products.
In 2011 the company embarked on a mission to demonstrate and harness the value of renewable energy. The Lincoln Electric wind tower, the largest known urban installation in North America, is sited 1.7 miles south of the Lake Erie shoreline and provides approximately 10 percent of the electrical needs for the company’s Cleveland manufacturing facilities. Annual savings are estimated at about $500,000.
The turbine’s 3 blades, each measuring 164 feet from the center of the hub to the blade tip, create a total blade swept area of 84,000 sq. ft.
The total height is 443 feet tall from the tower base to the tip of the blade. Total weight over 800,000 lbs.
Tower construction required 2,800 cubic yards of earth to be excavated to 14 feet below grade for base construction. 595 cubic yards of concrete went into the foundation base and pedestal along with 65 tons of reinforced steel rebar.
Lincoln electric’s manufacturing role in the tower construction included 2,951 lbs. of Lincolnweld® L-61® submerged arc wire and 5,875 lbs. of Lincolnweld® WTXTM flux.
Components were manufactured in the U.S., Germany and Poland.
