A little over five years ago, First Congregational Church made the decision to invest in solar panels. Due to the solar panels and replacement of older lights with LED lights, First Congregational Church reduced its purchase of electricity from the grid by more than half and lowered both its electric bills and its carbon footprint. A portion of the savings were shared with a nearby domestic abuse shelter. The church tracks its energy use with the Energy Star Portfolio Manager and electrical production by the solar panels with the Sunny Portal website. The average annual output of the panels over 5 years was 20.4 MWh.
