Living more sustainably doesn’t require a huge budget or total upheaval in your lifestyle. This house is an example of how even small changes and a little creativity can make a difference. We have a starter pv array – 2.2 kw is about half what we need but it does make a difference. And with a high efficiency wood stove to reduce heating costs we do ok. Our unique orchard with berms and swales and small (radically pruned) trees watered by rain that we’ve captured (water that’s directed away from our basement via a dry streambed) means we pump less from the well. Small raised bed gardens or even large pots grow lots of produce and it’s easier on our bodies as we age than traditional ground level gardens. For us, being more sustainable felt like something we were always saving up for. But we learned it can be a process instead of a once and done. Our home’s humble approach is to find whatever fits and start there.
