NATIONAL SOLAR TOUR
This is a small cinder-block house built in 1941. Before the solar panels were mounted on the roof, it was made fairly energy efficient: split-unit air conditioners, impact resistant windows and doors, and insullation in the attic. There are twenty-three solar panels on the roof. They supply more than enough power for the house. Several years ago I bought a two-battery power wall. The batteries power the house only when the grid goes down. Since installing the batteries, I have rarely had my computer interrupted (although the grid sometimes goes down six times a month). I’m delighted not to have to own and maintain a generator. Because there is power flowing into the grid, I bought an all-electric car at the end of last year. In October, I hope to show how the addition of charging my car has changed the Florida Power and Light monthly bill.
