We were surprised to find out our non-ideal roof (wrong orientation; some shading) could produce enough solar electricity to cover all our electric use, provide all our heat (heat pump) and provide us with 10,000 miles of (future) EV usage. We can achieve net-zero even though our home was built in 1970 and is nowhere near current energy-efficiency standards. With the Federal Tax Credit, our system is affordable and should pay for itself within 9 years. After that, it’s free electricity for as long as the system lasts (projected to be at least 25 years).
